Ruth at WH.jpg

Live Music from 8:30pm
Ruth Royall: https://ruthroyall.com/

Hailing from Southwest of England Ruth grew up in a creative
environment and this has embedded a deep musicality in her; she was writing music before she knew how, and the music that she was creating came from her core.

After years of experimenting with her sound and performing as a jazz singer on the UK and Berlin circuits, Ruth’s sound materialised. Layered with electronic influences Ruth had picked up from her Bristol heritage,

Her sound is a hybrid of old and new. It holds traces of her influences encompassing the early soul sounds of Billie Holiday and Etta, as well as more recent obsessions like Submotion Orchestra, Jamie Woon, and Nikka Costa.

10:30-3am:
Then our resident DJ will take us from 10pm to late playing funky, soulful disco & old school hip hop & Rnb.

The Duval Project - Friday 23rd February

Duval Project.jpg

The Duval Project are a Neo Soul/Jazz group from Bristol, UK. They are:
Marie Lister - Vocals
Gary Alesbrook - Trumpet/Flugelhorn
Andy Nowak - Keys
Richie Blake - Bass
Miguel Andrews - Drums
Dan Waldman - Guitar

“The project's original music combines chest-grabbingly tight rhythm grooves with deeply soulful songs...”

Each member of the project, all successful solo artists, bring an energy and passion to this outstanding musical group. An entertaining and surprising band filling their set with originals from their ever increasing repertoire.

Music: http://www.theduvalproject.com/music.html
Videos: http://www.theduvalproject.com/videos.html

More about the band:
We're a wake up call to British Jazz and Neo-soul, we've caught the moment, it's 2018! Passion is not a word you hear that often nowadays in music but The Duval Project have it in bucket loads. They're not making music to be famous or because its a good career, they are making music because they need to, because it is etched somewhere deep in their souls. Why the Duval Project? "because it's the only thing i ever wanted to do," says leader and trumpet player Gary Alesbrook. "This project is the culmination of 20 years of hard work..."
The Duval Project was born in Bristol, a city famous for fusion of musical styles. It's a city bred on jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, drum and bass and all these styles have shaped the band into what it is today. A music that fuses jazz with neo-soul, a music that has a heart beat and a passion.
"When i was younger, Bristol was the place to be, it was all going on, it was interesting. A massive influence on me. Early soul and jazz music has a heart to it, a groove. This is what Duval is all about."
The Duval Project is an honest, unpretentious band that grew out of the Bristol music scene. it features the ridiculously talented and in demand rhythm section of Richie Blake (bass), Miguel Andrews (drums) Andy Nowak (keys) and Dan Waldman (Guitar). They 'lock in' like no other UK section.
The final part of their story came when Gary met Marie Lister. "I had been looking for a singer that would not only compliment the band but also bring something new to the table. "Marie's influences are unbelievable! Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Ella Fitzgerald...she laps it all up and inspires us all to play at our best..."
When it comes to inspiration, this band eat it up and spit it out as something fresh and new. "It could be the smallest thing from any track, a sound, a groove, a chord..." Gary's love of jazz, Soul and Hip Hop ,having played with Raphael Saadiq and Lynden David Hall. Richie's love of funk. Andy's side-line trio project. Marie's many other projects including afro-beat and dance music. Their love of soundtracks. Jill Scott, D'angelo, Jose James....anything and everything. Music from now, music from then.
What really marks the Duval Project out is their attitude. "Alot of improvised music can be all about technique nowadays," says Gary. "It's boring, there's no soul, no groove, no pocket...nobody's having fun with it anymore. We take our music seriously, obviously, but we want to have fun with it too otherwise what's the point."
Their E.P was mixed by Grammy Award winning New York sound engineer Russell Elevado and mastered in LA by Dave Collins.

Due to high demand the Soul Strutters are back at Walcot House.

The Soul Strutters are a collective of professional musicians from Bristol who love nothing more than performing specially handpicked songs from the golden era of Funk, Soul, Disco and Rare Groove.

They are widely regarded as one of the busiest Funk and Soul bands going.

Formed at last-minute in October 2012 for a cocktail function, The Soul Strutters gelled immediately after the first 4-bars of ‘Use me Up’ by Bill Withers was performed.

From then on, the band were playing the circuit of live music venues near enough every weekend around the Bristol and surrounding area to the present day, solely through word of mouth.

The group was founded on a mutual love and respect for the music they grew up on and have always wanted to perform, and from the sheer smiles on their faces from start to finish, it’s clear that the passion and enjoyment radiates through to the audience.

By the end of 2016, Soul Strutters have completed over 900 gigs and over 200 weddings all over Britain, with 2017 proving to be their busiest year yet.

Unlike many wedding and corporate function bands, the Soul Strutters formed absolutely organically, with the single intention of jamming together for fun. Since then, they have become a full-time band gigging at a variety of special events, including weddings, anniversaries, birthday celebrations and charity events.
With a professional attitude towards all bookings you can be assured that the Soul Strutters will surpass your requirements, and put on a great show for your event, bringing all of their enthusiasm and passion to your stage.
Whether it is a small intimate pub gig, a background entertainment in a restaurant, a live music venue or a wedding, it won’t be one that your guests will forget, and you’ll struggle to find a live performance tighter than The Strutters!
